Injury Prevention Centre's

Prescription 4 Safety.

Heat & Sun Safety

  • Keep babies out of direct sunlight as it can cause skin damage and dehydration. Keep the babies in the shade and provide them with cool liquids to keep them hydrated (Government of Canada, 2022).
  • Do not apply sunscreen on a baby less than 6 months old without consulting with the healthcare provider as it can cause side effects such as rash (Food and Drugs Administration, 2024).
  • Recognize that direct sunlight can be dangerous for babies as they are not born with a developed skin protection system. Babies can't physically move themselves out of the sunlight and need to rely on their caregivers to protect them from the sun (Government of Canada, 2022).
