Injury Prevention Centre's

Prescription 4 Safety.

Choking

  • As babies explore the world by putting things in their mouths, keep small objects, toys, coins, and balloons out of reach. Anything that fits through a toilet paper tube can be a choking hazard (Parachute, 2024).
  • Always supervise your baby during meals, ensure they sit upright, and prepare food in safe sizes and textures, such as mashing, cutting, or grating, to reduce choking risks (Parachute, 2024).
  • Avoid feeding your baby while walking, running, playing, or riding in a moving vehicle, as a sudden stop may cause choking. If you're driving, you may not be able to help them (Alberta Health Services, 2023).
