Choking

  • Avoid providing rounded and firm foods to children younger than age of 4 as it can be a choking hazard (e.g. seeds, nuts, raisins) (Parachute, 2024).
  • Teach your child not to eat while walking, running, playing, or riding in a moving vehicle, as a sudden stop may cause choking. If you're driving, you may not be able to help them (Alberta Health Services, 2023).
  • Be cautious of small, breakable objects (e.g. toys) that are the size of a cardboard toilet paper roll, as they can fit into a child's mouth and be a choking hazard (Nemours KidsHealth, 2023).
