Injury Prevention Centre's

Prescription 4 Safety.

Animal Safety

  • Ensure you wash your hands after handling your pet, as some pets (e.g., turtles, lizards) may carry salmonella, while others (e.g., cats) may pass on parasites that can make your child sick (Healthy Parents Healthy Children, n.d.).
  • Always provide supervision around animals and teach your child not to tease or touch animals in ways that might hurt them (Healthy Parents Healthy Children, n.d.).
  • Prevent your child from being in contact with animal feces, urine, and vomit as it can cause an infection (Alberta Health Services, 2023).
