Prescription 4 Safety

Choking

  • Teach your child to chew their food thoroughly, and to never eat when they are walking, running or playing. (IPC Elementary School IP toolkit)
  • Teach children to recognize and avoid common choking hazards, such as coins, latex balloons, and small toys and to keep these objects out of their mouths (Alberta Health Services, 2023).
  • Remove drawstrings from your child’s hoodies and jackets. Teach children not to tie objects like shoe laces, ropes or drawstrings around their necks. (IPC Elementary School IP toolkit)
