Injury Prevention Centre's

Prescription 4 Safety

Burns & Scalds

  • Store chemicals, lighters, and matches in locked cabinets, and install smoke alarms in sleeping areas to prevent fires and chemical burns (Injury Prevention Centre, 2025).
  • Set the bathwater to no hotter than 38°C and water heater for household taps to 49°C as a child's skin is thinner and more sensitive than an adult's skin (Parachute, 2023).
  • Keep hot liquids, fireplaces, and household appliances out of reach, as a baby’s skin burns faster than an adult’s and can be severely injured in seconds (Parachute, 2023).
