Injury Prevention Centre's

Prescription 4 Safety.

Button Batteries

  • Keep all button batteries and battery-powered items out of reach, and ensure battery compartments are securely closed with screws or strong tape (Parachute, 2024).
  • Be aware of common household objects and toys that contain button batteries. Safely store or dispose of used batteries as even “dead” ones can cause harm (Healthy Parents Healthy Children, n.d.).
  • If your child swallows a button battery, do not try to make them vomit. Seek emergency medical care immediately. If it’s within 12 hours of swallowing the battery and the baby can swallow liquids, give 2 teaspoons of honey (Alberta Health Services, 2022).
