Injury Prevention Centre's

Prescription 4 Safety.

Poisonings

  • Babies are naturally curious and explore their world through touch, taste, and smell. This means they often put things in their mouths that they shouldn't. Be aware of where your child is and what they are doing at all times (Canadian Paediatric Society, 2025).
  • Always store medication, healthcare products, and household chemicals out of sight and reach of your baby, using locks and child-resistant packaging (Alberta Health Services, 2024).
  • Call 911 immediately if the baby is unconscious, having difficulty breathing, experiencing seizures, or displaying other life-threatening symptoms. If an incident occurs, bring the source of the poison to the hospital to help medical professionals treat your baby accurately in a timely manner (Alberta Health Services, 2023).
