A child needs time to develop the skills to be able to make decisions to cross roads safely. Young children can usually safely cross simple roads but the skills to cross busy, complicated roads develops around the ages of 9 to 11 years old (Parachute 2025).
Educate your child about traffic safety signals and signs, and how to cross the road by following the rules (Alberta Health Services, 2023).
Do not allow your child to play near the garage, driveways, or around cars. Drivers may not see or expect a child in these areas (Alberta Health Services, 2023).
