Ensure you and your child wash your hands after handling your pet, as some pets (e.g., turtles, lizards) may carry salmonella, while others (e.g., cats) may pass on parasites that can make your child sick (Healthy Parents Healthy Children, n.d.).
Always provide supervision around animals. Teach your child not to tease or touch animals in ways that might hurt them (Healthy Parents Healthy Children, n.d.).
Prevent your child from being in contact with animal feces, urine, and vomit as it can cause make them sick (Alberta Health Services, 2023).
